Jerry Avant, Sr.'s Fundraiser
Let's share the joy of fishing with children with special needs
Let's honor Jerry's love of helping others and his love of fishing by supporting the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation.
Since 1991, the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation has partnered with volunteers across the country to host fishing events for children with special needs. Many families discover fishing as a hobby that all family members can enjoy at these events. In 2024, C.A.S.T. will host over 100 events sharing the joy of fishing with thousands of children with special needs.
Jerry Donald Avant, Sr., known affectionately as Jerry to his friends and family, departed this life on May 4, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on August 23, 1931, in Gladewater, Texas, he was a son of the soil who carried the spirit of his hometown with him throughout his life. Jerry passed away in Longview, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.
Jerry's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and service. A proud Korean War veteran, he served his country with honor before returning to his roots in East Texas. There, he found his calling as a machinist, working for several local companies and becoming a respected figure in his field. Jerry's work ethic was matched only by his devotion to his family, especially to Nyla, his beloved wife of 52 years, who preceded him in death.
Jerry's life was enriched by the love and support of his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love with his son, Donnie Avant (Kristen), and daughter, Gwen Stauffer (Tim). He was a cherished grandfather to Amber Lawrence (Jonathan), Nick Stauffer (Diana), Brooke Avant Ezell (Troy), Mason Avant, Peyton & Kara Cramer. The joy of his life extended to his great-grandchildren, Myla and Logan Lawrence, who will carry forward the memories of their adoring great-grandfather. Jerry was also a beloved brother to Bim Avant (Linda), Ann Russell, and Martha Jane Wilkins. He also leaves many nieces and nephews. His passing was preceded by his siblings Ruth Waller, Bud Avant, and Betty Yochem, and grandson Chris Benson.
An avid outdoorsman, Jerry's passion for fishing was well-known throughout East Texas. He could often be found with a fishing rod in hand, patiently waiting for the next big catch. His love for adventure also took him across the United States, where he made countless memories and friends. At home, Jerry found solace in the simple pleasure of feeding and watching wildlife, a pastime that reflected his kind and thoughtful nature.
Those who knew Jerry would describe him as friendly, loving, and thoughtful-a man who never met a stranger and whose presence was a comfort to all. He approached life with a gentle demeanor and a warm smile, leaving a positive impact on everyone he encountered.
